On Wednesday afternoon, Ky Bak and his wife were dragging bags of wet garbage out of their home on South Chicago Street. The floors of their house, where they’ve lived for about 10 years, were covered in soaked blankets from the Red Cross. The blankets squished with water when Bak walked on them.
"Two feet and a half go inside the house and all the food in refrigerator: all damaged,” Bak said, pointing into his kitchen.
The produce bins in their refrigerator sloshed with thick, brown water. Most of their wardrobe was ruined, too.
"A lot of stuff inside the house,” Bak said, “shoes and some clothes put in the drawer, all full of water, all damaged, everything."

On the mornings of December 27 and 28, the tidally influenced Duwamish River overtopped its banks and flooded numerous homes and businesses in Seattle’s South Park neighborhood, a low-lying community which has experienced moderate flooding and sewer backups in the past. This week’s extreme king tide, combined with days of heavy rain, made for an unprecedented event.
Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) and community partners, as well as other City Departments, are providing direct support to impacted neighbors. SPU currently has a mobile trailer onsite to facilitate recovery efforts.
Currently, Seattle Public Utilities has:
- Worked directly with more than 15 homes and businesses to assess damage and offer short-term emergency housing. People from approximately properties are currently in hotels.
- Cleared more than 9,500 pounds of garbage and debris from the neighborhood.
- Temporarily located hygiene facilities (porta-potties, handwashing stations, and shower facilities) to support community members, nonprofit staff, and city staff who need them.
Two community nonprofits have been providing critical leadership and support: the Duwamish River Community Coalition and Just Health Action. They have been at the front line of supporting impacted community members including identifying, prioritizing, and filling community needs.
High tide inundation was the primary cause of this event, but different weather events combined to deliver a devastating punch to the community. As a city, we need to continue working together to adapt to new extremes that are expected to occur more frequently in the future.
SPU is committed to not only supporting impacted residents with immediate needs but also long-term investments and strategies: infrastructure projects that improve drainage, planning with community partners to improve resiliency in the face of climate change, and advocating for federal support to protect our communities from flooding.

On one hand, it’s surprising to peruse cross-genre visionary Yves Tumor‘s 2023 tour dates and see that they’re already at Franklin Music Hall-headlining status. On the other, it makes total sense; their Making Time Pure Helloween appearance at Warehouse On Watts was the in-demand ticket of autumn 2021, their pandemic-era projects Heaven To A Tortured Mind and The Asymptotical World were critically acclaimed, and there are few if any artists right now making music this gripping and expansive.
Tumor’s new album is going to be called — deep breath — Praise A Lord Who Chews But Which Does Not Consume; (Or Simply, Hot Between Worlds), and it’s due out March 17th on Warp! Records. This week, in addition to the tour announcement, we get to hear the new single, “Echolalia,” via a gripping Gulliver’s Travels-themed music video directed by Jordan Hemingway, a frequent visual collaborator or Tumor’s. Watch the video below, and get tickets and more information on the Franklin Music Hall show at the WXPN Concerts and Events page.
