The annual Christmas Boat Parade on Lake Union is happening this Saturday, Dec. 17.
The parade—in which dozens of private boats light up their vessels and cruise around Lake Union—is also a toy drive for the Seattle Children’s Hospital.
“It’s Holiday boating for a cause; while keeping our active Pacific Northwest maritime community and industry united and keeping holiday traditions of active cruising on Lake Union,” the website reads.
Ballard’s West Marine store (1400 NW 45th St.) will be collecting toys for the toy drive and registering vessels for the parade on Dec. 15 and 16.
The parade will start at 7 p.m. at Fremont Tug and will go clockwise around Lake Union, finishing at Morrison Fuel Dock.
The boat parade will also be a contest, with five different categories:
1. Best In Show – People’s Choice Award
2. Best Santa & Reindeer Theme
3. Best & Biggest Christmas Tree & Lights Theme
4. Best Christmas Snowman, Winter Wonderland Theme
5. Most Overall Christmas Lights – Brightest & Most Colorful Boat in the Parade
Some of the best viewing will be at Gas Works Park, unless you have a boat and want to join in on the water (sign up online). For more information, email parade@seattlechristmasboatparade.com or send a text message to 206-999-3088.

The owners of The Noble Fir have sold their bar on Ballard Ave, and the new owners are turning it into a bar/restaurant called Belleau Wood.
Co-owners Ellen and Rick Kelly opened The Noble Fir in 2010, merging their love of the outdoors with their desire to open a bar. Ellen left her career as a lawyer, and Rick left his job at REI. They opened the bar with no experience in the food/beverage industry.
After running the bar for 12 years, Ellen told My Ballard that they were ready to move on.
“We’re not getting any younger so we’re just ready to move on to the next chapter in our lives.”
They listed the bar for sale in September, and now it appears they’ve found buyers. The Kellys posted the news on their door saying a new venture called Belleau Wood would be taking over and adding “hot food and booze,” with an expected mid-January opening.
We’ll update you when we learn more about the new venture.
Thanks Alex for the tip and photo

The much-anticipated opening of Rough & Tumble is here: The women’s sports bar opens Friday at 5309 22nd Ave NW.
Rough & Tumble has moved into the former Sawyer location in the Henry Whyte Building on Shilshole and 22nd.
Owner and founder Jen Barnes said the idea for Rough & Tumble was born from a desire to watch women’s sports on the big screen, “with sound, and not in my living room. Today, I’m investing in women’s sports and the business of women’s sports because it’s an imperative.”
Barnes said Rough & Tumble will prioritize women’s sports, with a focus on OL Reign, Seattle Storm, and women’s collegiate games. The bar will have a 110-foot video wall with 18 screens, which Barnes said will feature a number of both men’s and women’s sports—the Seahawks, Kraken, Mariners, and Sounders will all be broadcast in the bar.
Chef Tessa Roberts is heading up the kitchen, with pub classics and ingredients from farmers at the Ballard Farmers Market.
“It’s great to see this vision come to life as the demand for women’s sports is increasing at a rapid rate. This past season we witnessed teams across the league shatter attendance records, including OL Reign, and for the first time ever the NWSL Championship aired during primetime, breaking viewership records,” Michelle Haines, OL Reign’s VP of Marketing & Ticketing said in a statement about Rough & Tumble. “We’re thrilled that there will be a new home for fans of women’s sports to gather together and very excited for our loyal supporters to have a new and inclusive environment to watch all our matches.”
Along with broadcasting games, Rough & Tumble will also host athletes, special guests, and private events.
Opening day is Friday, Dec. 9 at 2 p.m., and their hours will be Monday to Thursday 3 p.m. to midnight, Friday 2 p.m. to 1 a.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 a.m., and Sunday 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.

The Lagunitas Taproom will be closing permanently next month after a six-year run in Ballard.
The Washington Beer Blog first reported the news, saying the brewery wants to shift its focus to other locations in Petaluma and Chicago rather than put resources into the Ballard location.
Lagunitas opened in January 2017 in what was once the Hilliard’s Beer space at 1550 49th St NW.
Lagunitas’ last day will be January 8. In honor of their closing, the taproom will host live music for their last few days open, with the Dusty 45s headlining the weekend shows.
