Summer: The Donna Summer Musical
Real talk: Critics say the “plot” of this jukebox musical, built around the iconic disco singer’s biggest hits, is at best thin (and at worst, disjointed and confused). But they also say there’s just something about it, like Donna Summer herself, that is compelling. The setup is similar to recent Broadway hit The Cher Show, in that three different singers portray Summer in different periods of her life — the teen church choir singer, the disco goddess and the older/wiser diva — often on stage at the same time. The singers are indisputably good and the songs are legendary. “I Feel Love,” “Love to Love You Baby,” “MacArthur Park,” “On the Radio,” “Dim All the Lights,” “Last Dance” — I mean, come on, is there a better New Year’s Eve soundtrack? For those of us who spent many youthful (OK, sure, and some adult) hours dancing around our bedrooms to these songs with a hairbrush as a microphone, it might just feel like a homecoming. –B.D.

Updated: August 30, 2022
Most swimming beaches in Seattle will close for the summer season on Monday, Sept. 5 according to the Seattle Parks and Recreation Department. In the meantime, four public swimming beaches in King County are still closed this week along Lake Washington after a sewage spill led to dangerous bacteria levels in the water last week. One, Madrona Beach in Seattle, reopened after bacterial levels went down there.
The beaches that are still closed due to high bacteria levels include:
- Gene Coulon (Renton)
- Matthews Beach (Seattle)
- Mevdenbauer Bay Beach (Bellevue)
- Newcastle Beach (Bellevue)
County health officials test swim beaches in King County along Lake Washington and Lake Sammamish for bacteria weekly from May to September. The tests are designed to detect feces or toxic algae in the water. Because bacteria has been detected, the county advises people to stay out of the water at these beaches and to keep pets away from the water as well.
Swimming in contaminated water can make people or pets sick. For updates check out the King County website.

During closures, King County sends teams each week to re-test the water until bacteria levels decline to the acceptable range. Estimates for reopening the beaches impacted by the sewage spill were not immediately available. Residents can check for the latest closures on the county's website and sign up for email or text alerts.
The latest beach closures arrive just ahead of the next round of late summer heat, which is forecast to warm temperatures back near the 90s Wednesday and Thursday.
