SAMSUNG confirms GDDR7 uses PAM3 signaling

Samsung confirms that their next-generation GDDR7 memory technology will be up to 25% more power efficient than GDDR6 standard. The company reveals that this type of memory is using PAM3 (Pulse-Amplitude Modulation) signaling, offering 25% better efficiency than NRZ (Non-Return to Zero) currently used by the GDDR6 standard.

Samsung confirms that GDDR7 is now projected to support bandwidth up to 36 Gbps, so twice as fast as the current 18 Gbps chips used by most Radeon RX 6000 GPUs. The soon-to-be-released Radeon 7000 series feature 20 Gbps GDDR6 memory, however it will still be slower than GDDR6X standard developed by Micron and NVIDIA for GeForce RTX 30/40 GPUs. This technology uses PAM4 signaling method and offers speeds up to 23 Gbps.
Graphics card utilizing GDDR7 standard will offer up to 1152 GB/s of bandwidth across 256-bit memory bus and 1728 GB/s when attached to 384-bit wide memory controllers. The GDDR7 memory technology is not expected to be used in graphics cards any time soon, furthermore, Samsung did not specify the timing and plans for the standard adoption yet.
